When Things Don’t Go to Plan: DiscoAbility Animal Night Recap

DiscoAbility Animal Night Recap

ree

What Happened at DiscoAbility Animal Night?

Well… not much. At least, not at first.

I was genuinely confused in the lead-up to our Animal-Themed DiscoAbility night. We had heaps of traffic to the website. People were landing on the ticket page. But no one was buying.

At first, I figured maybe people were busy – it was right after the Gold Coast Show and right before Father's Day. Still, it was weird. I’d had a few ticket sales through Eventbrite but none through the website, which was completely out of character.

Turns out, the buy button was broken. There was a glitch — one of those classic “turn it off and back on again” situations — and the system just wasn’t processing properly. I didn’t realise until it was too late. So, if you did try to buy a ticket and it didn’t work — I’m seriously sorry.

What the Night Was Actually Like (for the few who made it)

For those who did turn up? It was awesome.

Small group. Big vibes.

Since there were fewer people, everyone got a prize (some even got two), and there was more room to bust out dance moves without worrying about knocking someone’s drink over. We played animal-themed music, and by the end of the night, we let it evolve into more of a freestyle disco jam.

It was fun. It was personal. I got to chat more with the participants and support workers. We laughed, danced, and still made some good memories. It reminded me why these events matter — even when the crowd is small.

What I’m Doing to Make Sure This Doesn’t Happen Again

Mistakes happen — especially when you’re trying something new. This was only our third DiscoAbility event, so I’m still learning. I always tell the boys in the group that you won’t get better if you don’t keep trying. I’ve gotta take that same advice myself.

From now on:

  • I’ll test the ticket system twice before launching

  • I’ll keep Eventbrite running as a backup

  • And most importantly, if you see ANY issues on the website, please message me or comment on a post. I’ll sort it.

Upcoming Events

We’ve got two more DiscoAbility nights coming up:

🌀 Saturday, October 4th – Anime & Cartoon Theme

From Dragon Ball to Disney, dress up as your favourite animated legend.

🎃 November 1st – Halloween Night

Yes, it's the day after Halloween, but we’re keeping the spooky spirit alive. Come in costume!

There will also be another in late November – that one’s still a surprise.

🎃 November 29th – hmmmm

still undecided ... what do you think? let me know in the comments if you have some cool ideas on what we could do for the theme

🪩 Tickets will be live soon — and this time, they’ll work properly:👉 www.slimgym.com.au/events I just want to say a big, big thank you to the legends who helped make the night what it was — even with the hiccups.

Huge shoutout to Tash and her family, who always bring great energy, support, and good vibes. You're honestly the kind of crew that makes this worth doing.

And of course, Dee from Care to Share Gold Coast — thank you again for all the ways you show up and support these nights. Whether it's helping on the night or spreading the word behind the scenes, I appreciate you.

Even though the turnout was small this time, the people who were there made it a special night. Every event teaches me something new, and I’m so grateful for those who’ve stuck with me as I work it all out.

See you at the next one — and we’ll make sure the ticket gremlins don’t get in this time!

– Jase 🖤
