Networking Event at Johnny H: Connecting, Collaborating, and Creating Change

Writer: JaseJase

A Special Thanks to Johnny H

We want to extend a huge thank you to Alyce from Johnny H for hosting today's networking event at Johnny H. The venue provided the perfect space for open discussions, collaboration, and sharing ideas about how we can all better serve the disability and mental health community.

Johnny H also runs an incredible SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) program, helping young individuals transition from school to the workforce by developing key skills and confidence. Their work is essential in bridging the gap between education and employment for those who need extra support.

A Close-Knit Gathering with Meaningful Conversations

This event was a more intimate gathering, which allowed everyone to deeply connect, learn about each other’s services, and discuss why we do what we do. We explored industry challenges, shared beliefs, and identified areas where we can work together to improve outcomes for people with disabilities (PWD).

Industry Leaders Making a Difference

Mental Health and Disability Funding Gaps – Ming from Serenity Wellbeing Clinic

Ming from Serenity Wellbeing Clinic provided valuable insights into the mental health funding gaps for NDIS participants. He discussed the challenges faced by disability clients, providers, and social workers in securing the right funding and support.

Ming also highlighted funding options available through job seeker agencies, which help individuals with mental health challenges regain stability and employment. This is a critical piece of the puzzle in ensuring holistic recovery and independence for participants. Additionally, he offers assistance for providers and their staff to develop a better understanding of how to effectively support individuals in these situations.

Changing Expo Giveaways for Real Impact – Jodi from Growing Daily

Jodi Kneepkens from Growing Daily (One of our podcast guests Growing Daily Podcast Episode) shared an innovative marketing approach. Instead of distributing promotional freebies at expos, her business will provide items that meet real community needs, such as period underwear and mobility aids.

This initiative is just the beginning, and we’re excited to see how Growing Daily continues to redefine community engagement with meaningful support.

Inspiring Resilience – Maria from Bright Horizons Supports WLD

Maria Emanolidis, a stroke and brain tumor survivor, amazed us with her story of defying medical expectations. Doctors predicted she would never walk or talk again, but she not only recovered—she wrote a book about her journey: The Girl in the Blue Helmet: The Tumour That Saved My Life.

Maria is now setting up Bright Horizons Supports WLD, drawing from her personal experiences to ensure PWD receive the right support with dignity and compassion. She is determined to be a leader in ethical disability services, learning from past provider shortcomings and setting a new standard for quality care.

Creating Real Homes, Not Just Housing – Paige from Skypoint Support Services

Paige Pitman from Skypoint Support Services  is on a mission to make SIL (Supported Independent Living) houses feel like real homes. Operating in Logan and Redlands, her vision is to create comfortable, warm, and welcoming spaces, not just clinical facilities.

Paige is currently decorating and refining these homes to ensure participants feel truly at home. We’re excited to see the final results and how these environments positively impact the wellbeing of residents.

A Hidden Talent – Alyce from Johnny H

We also discovered that Alyce has written her own children’s book! How did she manage to keep that a secret? We look forward to learning more about her book and the inspiration behind it.
