DiscoAbility Helensvale: Real Friendships on the Gold Coast

Sorry to those who left early ... I am shocking at remembering to take group photos

DiscoAbility Helensvale at ARRC Rehab

A huge thank you to ARRC Rehab in Helensvale for hosting DiscoAbility and allowing us access to their awesome space. We really appreciate the support and the opportunity to create inclusive, community-focused events in a venue that genuinely welcomes it.

Our latest DiscoAbility Helensvale event was held at our new location, ARRC Rehab in Helensvale on the Gold Coast — and it was a really good night.

Smaller group. A few returning faces. Some new ones. A lot of dancing. A lot of laughs.

But what mattered most wasn’t the music.

It was the mingling.

I started DiscoAbility because I realised something was missing. Some of the guys in my programs would absolutely love a disco — but more than that, they needed a space where it was easier to find their people.

In this industry, especially with intellectual disabilities, support workers often become the closest social connection. And that makes sense. They spend a lot of time together. They care. They show up.

But there’s something different about a friend who is not paid to be there.

On a human level, knowing someone chooses you — that they want to be there — that matters. That builds confidence. That builds identity. That builds belonging.

That’s the real goal behind DiscoAbility Helensvale.

Watching Friendships Start

What excited me most during this discoability helensvale Gold Coast event wasn’t just the dancing.

It was seeing regulars starting to open up.

Instead of standing in one corner with their support worker, they were moving around the room. Talking. Laughing. Including new people.

That shift matters.

When connection becomes normalised in a space — when the culture says “you belong here” — it spreads beyond that night.

My big win? The day two different participants from two different companies meet at the disco and say, “We want to hang out.”

With or without supports. Safely. Comfortably. But by choice.

That’s Social and Community, right?!

Making It Easier to Connect

I tried something new this time that didn’t quite work (live and learn).

My plan was to have ticket holders list their favourite interests during the ticket booking process— Pokémon, D&D, Transformers, SpongeBob, whatever it is — so I could call it out on the night and group people together.

For some reason, the info didn’t come through properly. So I shall make this easier next time.

Next time, we’ll simplify it. Interest cards on arrival. Quick group call-outs:

  • “Pokémon crew over here.”

  • “D&D players in this corner.”

  • “Who’s into gaming?”

  • “Who loves dancing?”

  • “Anyone starting a new D&D group?”

Rapport gets easier when there’s a shared starting point.

That’s the next evolution of DiscoAbility Helensvale.

ANd everyone loves some prizes right

Why We Don’t Run Them Every Month

Running an event like DiscoAbility Helensvale isn’t as simple as turning on a speaker and opening the doors. There’s a fair bit behind the scenes, setup, equipment, prizes, advertising, posting, planning time and all the behind-the-scenes work that makes the night feel effortless for everyone attending.

To keep the experience as intended, hosting these events every three to four months is the most sustainable option right now. I’d rather run fewer nights that are genuinely worth attending than stretch it thin and lose what makes it special.

Long term, I’ll continue looking at smarter ways to support and grow the event so we can increase frequency without compromising the experience.

Because the mission isn’t just to run a disco.

It’s to create a space where real friendships can start.

The Bigger Vision for DiscoAbility on the Gold Coast

DiscoAbility isn’t just a dance night.

It’s an inclusive social event on the Gold Coast designed to make real friendships easier.

Not forced.

Not structured therapy.

Not transactional.

DiscoAbility Helensvale is open to all ages, support workers attend free, and the environment is sensory-aware — gentle lighting, no jump scares, and a space designed to feel safe and welcoming for everyone.

Just a space where people with autism and other disabilities can relax, dance, talk, and maybe meet someone who becomes part of their real world — not just their funded hours.

If you’d like to attend the next DiscoAbility Helensvale event, join the mailing list or grab tickets early when they’re released. (Follow on facebook or tik tok where I will always post upcoming events like this)

And if you know someone who would benefit, send them this.

Because everyone deserves a place where making real friends feels possible.
