A New Way to Connect – Why We Created DiscoAbility
DiscoAbility isn’t just an event — it’s a community builder. The idea sparked after I saw a Kiwi dad create a backyard hangout for his kids and their friends over the holidays. It looked so fun and welcoming. That night, I barely slept — my brain went into overdrive thinking about how something like that could work here.
The next day at the NDIS Small Business & Provider Meet Up, I chatted with Tamara from Dignified Movement — she said something that (without knowing it) locked it all into place for me. It felt like a green light from the universe.
Many support workers — especially independents — want to help their people find their people. DiscoAbility is about creating that space. A place where personalities can shine, where diversity is embraced, and where the right bump-in can turn into a new friendship. It’s our first ever event — but we’re dreaming big already.
What Makes DiscoAbility a Standout Disability Event on the Gold Coast?
Lots of larger disability services have the advantage of scale — lots of staff, variety of participants, and internal social opportunities. But smaller providers and solo support workers often don’t have that same access.
DiscoAbility is a platform where multiple groups, supports, and participants can meet. It’s not about one business or one group — it’s about bringing people together. Think of it as a chance for real-world social networking — not just for participants, but for support workers to connect and collaborate too.
If you’ve ever asked "Where can my teen or young adult with a disability make friends outside of school or therapy?" — this is one answer.
If you're searching for disability events Gold Coast locals actually enjoy and feel safe attending, this is the one to try.
What to Expect on the Night
It’s our first event, so we’re keeping it flexible and sensory-considered. Here’s what you can expect:
Dress-ups encouraged – Participants and support workers are the decorations. It’s a fun way to express yourself.
Soft sensory lighting – Kmart-style pastel lights that change gently, no harsh strobes or flashing.
80s tunes all night – Including fun group songs like the Chicken Dance and Timewarp (yes, I’ll be joining in!).
Glow sticks – For those who want a bit of sparkle.
Chill-out zone – Need a break? Step outside or into a quieter area with support.
Capped numbers – So it won’t feel overwhelming. There’ll be space to move, breathe, and engage at your pace.
Whether someone wants to dance, spectate, or just hang out, they’ll be welcomed.
Safety, Comfort, and Support
We know the first time at a new event can be nerve-wracking. That’s why we’ve made sure:
There’s outside access and a designated quiet zone
Lighting and music are low-stimulation and adjustable
There’s room to move, not a packed-out vibe
Support workers are welcome and encouraged to participate
This isn’t Surfers Paradise on New Year’s Eve — it’s a gentle, inclusive space for people to come exactly as they are.
The Response So Far
We haven’t even ramped up the promotion yet, and tickets are already moving! One mum said she grabbed hers early because she "knows how rare events like this are" and didn’t want to miss out. We’ve also got the amazing Jodi from Growing Daily Disability Services lending a hand — and maybe even doing the Timewarp!
The support from the community so far has been brilliant — and we’re excited to see how it continues to grow.
